Transport throughout Italy is on strike to protest against the Italian government's proposed 2006 budget, which includes some 20 billion euros in spending cuts and revenue-raising measures to keep Italy's deficit in check.

The three collective trade unions on strike represent a tiny minority of the country's 95 percent public transport sector & 75 percent of regional & non-urban transport workers being represented by ASSTRA, the National Association of Local Public Transport.
