Country Code +1
Area Codes 787 and 939
Puerto Rico is part of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). As such, it uses the country code of 1, which it shares with much of the Caribbean, the US, Canada, and other places within the NANP. In the late 1950s, most islands in the Caribbean were assigned the area code of 809. Due to tremendous growth in telecommunications in the mid-90s, each island nation and territory was assigned its own area code within the NANP. Puerto Rico was originally assigned the area code of 787; on 1 August 2001 the area code of 939 was added island-wide as an overlay code.
