Coffe, Caffè the Italian way

23 08 2006

If you are in Italy and you order a capuccino after lunch or dinner you will expose your Anglo-Saxon ignorance. It would be unthinkable to an Italian to drink a capuccino at any time other than breakfast. An espresso instead would be a good choice.

So here we will offer you some tips, terms and words to order your coffe as italians do.

Caffè, caffè normale or caffè espresso: the traditional strong shot of coffee, served in small espresso cups. Essential after meals. If you ask for a “caffè”, this is what you will get. Or simply order specifically for an “espresso”.

Caffè doppio: two shots of a caffè espresso.

Caffè lungo: its name may translate as “long coffee”, but this is still basically an espresso, served with a dash of hot water in the usual espresso cup.

Caffè americano: If a espresso is too strong for oyur taste them ask for an american coffe served in a larger cup and noticeably watered down. If you want milk (latte) with it, you will have to ask.

Caffè latte: a small amount of coffee with a lot of milk, usually served in a thermal glass. Can be hot or cold (caldo or freddo). Asking simply for a “latte” will get you a glass of milk.

Cappuccino or cappuccio: you will rarely see frothy cappuccino ordered at any time other than breakfast. Never order a Capuccino after lunch or dinner.

Caffè macchiato: macchiato means “stained”, and this coffee is an espresso stained with a dash of milk. An acceptable alternative to a cappuccino after a meal.

Caffè corretto: “correcting” your misbehaving coffee means adding a shot of grappa or other such liquor. Usually taken after lunch or dinner.

Caffè marocchino: This a caffè espresso in a glass, topped with a layer of cocoa and frothy milk. Its also called "mochaccino or Moka"

Caffè or cappuccino decaffeinato: an espresso or a cappuccino made from decaffeinated coffee.

Caffè shakerato: This is a frosthy, ice-cold drink made from a shot of espresso, sugar and ice in a cocktail shaker. It is known too as Ice Capuccino

YouTube Pushes Branded Channels, Paris Hilton Jumps In

In an attempt to turn its popular web presence into a commercial juggernaut, YouTube unveiled a fresh advertising initiative on Tuesday. The new offering is launching with Paris Hilton and Warner Bros. Records, and features "Participatory Video Ads" and "Branded Channels." PVAs are generated by the sponsor, and employ typical YouTube features, including the ability to share, embed and rate content. Advertising partners can also employ customizable, MySpace-like channels to "create deeper, more brand-centric video experiences." Channels showcase content, serve as a forum for user competitions, and allow viewers to subscribe to a brand’s video feed. One of Hilton’s advertisements features brief introductory remarks by the artist, followed by the music video, "Stars are Blind."

According to YouTube, the initiative is “the first step toward defining a new advertising model for video entertainment on the internet.” And while its advertising program seems primed to harness the viral power of viewer-to-viewer distribution, advertisers will still be under pressure to create content that feels genuine. Recently, Smirnoff posted the rap parody "Tea Partay," which earned a 4.5 star rating (out of 5) from viewers. That piece was designed not to feel like an advertisement — something executives deemed crucial to its viral success. And the Smirnoff experiment grabbed well over 800,000 views over two weeks, in addition to media attention from such outlets as the Wall Street Journal. But success stories like those could create problems for the latest YouTube initiative, because Smirnoff created a splash without paying a dime for the placement.

China Develops Its Own High-Speed Train

18 02 2006

Germany faces tough competition from China for its magnetic
levitation train Transrapid.
Could it force the Transrapid consortium onto the holding track
on the sought-after Chinese market?

China is developing a model to compete with the German high-speed
magnetic levitation train Transrapid. According to the German newspaper Die Welt,
Chinese researchers in Shanghai already want to test their own version in July.

The Chinese model with the name Zhui Feng (Hunt the Wind)
would reach speeds of 500 kilometers an hour (310 mph)
and therefore be as fast as the German Transrapid.

Chief engineer Zheng from the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Cooperation (CAC),
which is developing the train, said CAC was not simply copying Transrapid.

"The one we're building is completely different from the German one," said Zheng,
who is responsible for design and technology. "Basically,
we don't know that much about the German technology."

The only Transrapid connection in the world links Shanghai and its airport.
China is planning an extension of this connection to the city of Hangzhou,
180 kilometers away.

Transrapid spokesman Peter Wiegelmann said the German train had a significant
advantage compared to the Chinese competition.
It has been in commercial use for three years and proven its dependability.
It has transported six million passengers already.

Bildunterschrift: Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift:
The German Transrapid consortium is hoping for an order from Britain
"That's why we expect opportunities with the Transrapid technology,"
said Wiegelmann. The consortium, made up of Thyssen, Siemens und Adtranz,
was "optimistic" that it would win the contract for the new route in Shanghai.

"The most important thing now is Munich though" Wiegelmann said.
The Transrapid consortium is pushing for speedy construction
of the long-awaited airport connection in Munich.
The project approval procedure is currently in process.

The Transrapid consortium also hopes for orders from the United States,
Britain and the Middle East.
